When training your dog, there are many different ways to do so and it can be quite infuriating for the owner and dog when neither likes the way the training is going. When becoming a new pet parent, it can be a little overwhelming when trying to find a good way to train your pooch, and you are not alone when it comes to that.
Here are some of the most popular dog training techniques to help you and your pooch out with training.
Positive reinforcement is known as the most straightforward type of training. It mostly has to do with rewarding the dog when it shows good behavior and not rewarding the dog when it shows bad behaviors. This helps the dog associate good behaviors with rewards and it helps prevent the dog from performing bad behaviors. Positive reinforcement also has to remain consistent throughout the training process. This method is very effective and is great when learning commands and correcting wrong behaviors.
Clicker training has many of the same principles and is usually paired with positive reinforcement training. This tactic relies heavily on a clicker, a device that makes a noise, similar to a whistle. This clicker is clicked every time that a good or wanted behavior is performed. The dog will associate the click, reward, and command all together when using this training which allows it to be very effective with learning new tricks with puppers.
Electronic training is a type of training that is reliant on the usage of an electronic collar that delivers a shock or a spray of citronella only when the dog shows bad behaviors. This type of training does help with teaching dogs the boundaries of unfenced areas and in areas where leash training is not usable, but there are many issues with this type of training. This type of training relies on punishments on bad behaviors instead of rewards on good behaviors. This means the dog only learns what isn’t allowed instead of what is allowed. It also can create stress and permanent anxiety issues with the dog. That is mainly why electronic training is not typically recommended for new pet parents.
Model/Mirror training relies mainly on the dog learning by observing others. When providing the dog something to mimic that shows good behaviors, the dog learns that it is a good behavior and mimics it. This type of training typically is where the training will use a human as the model and praise the person when something wanted happens and scold them when something unwanted happens. The dog will then learn to mimic the behaviors that will get them praise and not do the behaviors that get scolding. This form of training has a higher success rate, similar to positive reinforcement and clicker training, and is one of the more effective forms of training.
